The navigation bar, or Nav
Bar, is a tool for finding your way around a Web site. It allows
you to get the information you need as quickly as possible. After
a little practice, this tutorial will familiarize you with the Nav
Bar, and have you surfing through the site in no time at all!
Memoryzine has two navigation bars, a top Navigation Bar and a Left
Hand Navigation Bar. The TOP Navigation bar contains five "buttons,"
each linking to a different page on the Web site. Clicking on any
one takes you to that page. Pages include HOME,COMMON MEMORY COMPLAINTS,
ASK DR. MEMORY, MEMORY PRODUCT DEMOS, and STORE. The LEFT HAND Navigation
bar contains thirteen "buttons,
each linking to a different page on the Web site. Click on any one
takes you to that page. Pages include, THE MEMORY WORKS, THE NEW
APPROACH, MEMORY FITNESS GAMES, MEMORY UNIVERSITY, MEMORY MONITOR,
PROFESSIONAL & CAREGIVER RESOURCES, PRACTICAL MEMORY INSTITUTE,
COGNITIVE TECHNOLOGY JOURNAL, MEMORY GLOSSARY, MEMORY HEALTH NOTES,
TESTIMONIALS, TELL OUR RESEARCHERS WHAT YOU THINK and FAQ/HELP.
The first page you visit on any Web site is called the Home page
or Home. It introduces the site and tells you a little about what
you can expect to find while visiting. You can always return to
this page by clicking Home on the Nav Bar. By the same token, you
can return to the top of any page from anywhere within that page
by again clicking on the Nav Bar selection for that page.
Click your mouse on a
button in either the TOP or LEFT HAND navigation bar. You will automatically
"travel" to the linked page for that button. You can return to the
Home page by clicking Home on the Nav Bar. Or you can visit any other
page by clicking the appropriate button on the Nav Bar. [NOTE: Another
option is clicking the Back button located on the upper left
corner of your browser. Remember, the Back button always takes you
back to the page you just visited. If you want to go to a different
page, use the Nav Bar. If you want to return to the top of that page,
click on the appropriate Nav Bar for that page.]
For now, return to the Home page. Click on any topic that interests
you and travel to that page and learn all about it.
Practice using the Nav Bar until you are comfortable traveling around
the site. Hot links will also help you navigate the site.
A hot link is a special kind
of text that links to other documents. Hot links are used to provide
instant information about words, terms or concepts that might be unfamiliar
or that you might like to learn more about in the context of what
you are reading. Also called hypertext, most hot links are
highlighted in blue and underlined.
Using Hot Links
Roll your cursor over the highlighted word, Hot Link.
Notice that the pointer bar turns into a little hand. This tells you
that the link is "hot" or active and ready to be clicked. Now click
on the link to return to where you hot-linked from.
Now that you've returned, notice that the blue hot link has turned
dull purple. This simply reminds you that you've visited the link
before. It comes in handy for documents containing many hot links.
You can use any hot link as many times as you wish.
Downloading is a way to transfer
information and programs from a distant computer to your home computer.
Thanks to the miracle of the Internet, it's possible to download information
to your computer from any other computer in the world! All you need
is a modem and a connection to the Web. These days, most downloading
is done via the Internet. The rate at which downloading of files occurs
is dependent on several factors, primarily the type of Internet access
service you purchased. Most people have a dial-up modem service that
turns on and off as you need it. In the Demos page, we offer three
speeds at which to download selected demos from our CD-ROMs: "modem",
which is most common, "ISDN" which requires a dedicated line, and
"T1" which is found in many large organizations.
In order to take full advantage of
the Memoryzine Web site, you might need to download QuickTime, a small
program that lets you view video and animations, and hear audio.
First check to see if your computer is already loaded with QuickTime.
Do this by clicking Start on your Windows desktop and selecting
Find from the menu. Click Files or Folders from
the drop-down menu. Enter QuickTime in the dialogue box and click
Find Now. If QuickTime is installed on your computer, it will
appear on the list.
If QuickTime is not on your computer, it's very easy to install. To
download QuickTime, roll your cursor over the Memory Store
button on the Nav Bar and click on Demos from the drop-down
menu.

a window pops up telling you the name of the file (Quick TimeInstaller.exe).
Unless you enter another file location, the program will automatically
be stored in your Program folder.
Click on the window's Save button.

HOW DO I MAKE THE
PROGRAM WORK BETTER ON MY COMPUTER?
Performance varies from computer to
computer. The most crucial part is your CD-ROM drive speed. If performance
of the program is too slow, you may need to find a faster CD-ROM drive.
Another factor in speed performance is related to the number of colors
your monitor is running in. The memory works CD-ROMs all work in 256
colors or more. To set the number of colors you can display in Windows
95/98/NT, go to: Start Menu (bottom left corner) > Settings > Control
Panel > Display > Settings Tab. To set the number of Macintosh colors
you can display, go to: Apple Menu (top left corner) > Control Panels
> Monitors (or Monitors & Sound). The final controllable factor is
the screen size. The Memory Works CD-ROMs all work in a "640x480"
format. You may be running in a larger size. To set the display in
windows 95/98/NT to 640x480, go to: Start Menu (bottom left corner)
> Settings > Control Panel > Display > Settings Tab. The display will
automatically be changed for Macintosh computers.
On the CD-ROM you will find a file
called 'UserGuide.pdf'. This is your user guide. To view it, double
click it. If nothing happens, you may need to run the installer for
the viewer. Double click the file called 'PPView97.exe', follow the
directions given to you, and then try reopening the 'UserGuide.pdf'
again. You can also print a copy for easy reference.
